When Sleep Won’t Come

A practical workbook for sleep worry, wakeful nights and caring for the day after

What it is for

A hard night can follow you into the next day, then into the next bedtime, until the bed itself feels like a test. Work out what kind of sleep trouble you’re having, ease the pressure around bedtime, and plan for the nights and days that are still hard.

Inside

  • What kind of sleep difficulty you’re having
  • The bedtime pressure loop, and one place to ease it
  • An unfinished business page for earlier in the day
  • A plan for when you’re awake at night
  • Caring for the day after, and a two-week learning plan
  • A worked example on every exercise

You might be here if

  • You lie awake on the nights before something important.
  • You check the clock, or your sleep score, more than you’d like.
  • Bedtime has started to feel like a test you might fail.
  • You want to take sleep seriously without turning it into a project.

The worked example

Maya, 38, works in a council planning team and lives with her partner, Tom. She looks after her dad most Saturdays. For about four months she’s been lying awake on work nights, especially before big meetings. She checks her watch at 1am, then 2am, then 3am, and starts each workday already tired and already bracing for the next night.
Maya is a composite, not a real client. Their answers run through every exercise, so you see each one filled in before you fill in your own.
